The Vietnamese sports delegation has set a target to win 56-65 gold medals at the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, to be organized in Singapore from June 5-16, said Tran Duc Phan – vice head of the General Sports Department and head of the delegation in Singapore.
The delegation consists of 570 members, including 392 athletes and 178 coaches and officials, and will compete in 285 events of 28 sports. The tournament offers competition in a total of 36 sports.
Vietnam plans to win most of its gold medals in track and field, with 10 gold medals, and swimming, with 8 other hopeful golds.
Phan said the biggest challenges for Vietnamese athletes at other sporting competitions come from Africans and European who are granted citizenship in Southeast Asian nations.
Vietnam missed two gold medals in the men’s 400m run and women’s long jump events to those neutralized athletes at the 2014 Asian Games in South Korea, he added.
Singapore now has many table tennis players who were recently neutralized.
Concerning the risks of match fixing and doping, Phan revealed that the Vietnamese sports team will have two security officials to accompany them in Singapore. In addition, the Vietnamese national U-23 football team will likely have its own security officials.
The accompaniment of security officials will boost the confidence of Vietnamese athletes, Phan noted.
Coach Toshiya Miura said his U-23 football team is expected to make the semifinals in men’s football at the 28th SEA Games.
