Members of the Vietnamese national table tennis team had to stage ‘an internal competition’ last week before joining the 2015 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Singapore next month due to a disagreement over the selection of players.

Arguments broke out after Dao Duy Hoang protested the coaches of the team for eliminating him from taking part in the regional multi-sport tournament from May 5 to 16.

It forced the General Department of Sports under the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism to enter to settle the rift.

Sports managers came to a conclusion to hold an internal competition last week to decide on the five best female players and five best male players to go to Singapore.

The contest decided that the ten players would include Nguyen Anh Tu, Dinh Quang Linh, Tran Tuan Quynh, Duong Van Nam and Le Tien Dat for the men’s events, and Nguyen Thi Nga, Phan Hoang Tuong Giang, Mai Hoang My Trang, Vu Thi Ha and Pham Thi Thien Kim for the women’s.

Vuong Bich Thang, head of the general department, also warned the coaching board of the team for causing disagreement among members of the national team.

Thang concluded that Nguyen Duc Long, head of the coaching team, must take responsibility for the trouble.

One coach said on condition of anonymity that contention among members of the team may still last after the 2015 SEA Games.

“The selection of athletes for the SEA Games was not fair and coaches often favor players from their provincial team,” the coach added.

“Players selected for a training camp for the SEA Games are often not active in training because they fear that their strength will be discovered by players from other teams and it may harm their results at domestic competitions later.”

So, training camps for an international competition are often not effective, he added.
