More than 20 Cambodian garment workers killed in crash

At least 21 garment workers were killed and five seriously injured on May 19 morning when the van they were traveling on their way to work in Svay Rieng province crashed with a tourist bus, according to police.

“Twenty-one people died when a van filled with workers crashed into a tourist bus traveling from Vietnam to Phnom Penh,” said Svay Rieng provincial police chief Koeng Khorn.

Mr. Khorn added that police are still investigating the crash, which occurred at about 7 am in Kompong Ro district, to determine the cause, and said he did not know the name of the bus company.

Ros Thorn, a doctor at the Svay Rieng Provincial Referral Hospital, said the number of dead had climbed to 25 after doctors were unable to save at least three people injured in the crash.

“The number dead is now 25. Most of those injured were in very serious condition and died,” he said.

Pav Sina, president of the Collective Union of Movement of Workers, said the garment workers were members of his union and that at least five remained in serious condition.

“Five victims are now receiving urgent medical treatment at Chi Phu referral hospital in Bavet City,” he said. “We have no hope the five victims will survive because of their serious condition.”
