Ninth Swing for the Kids to kick off in Hanoi


The ninth annual Swing for the Kids charity golf tournament will kick off on May 10 at the Kings’ Island golf resort in Dong Mo, Son Tay district, Hanoi, the organising board said on April 10.


The event, co-organised by the Vietnam Investment Review and the Foreign Investment Agency under the Ministry of Planning and Investment, is expected to attract more than 144 representatives from diplomatic corps, international organisations and the business community.


The tournament aims to raise funds to support outstanding students from low-income families. According to the board, the award ceremony will be held in the Kings’ Island golf resort at 18:00 the same day.


Over the past eight years, the organising board has granted more than 11,000 scholarships to students from low-income families and supported the construction of schools and classrooms in 38 provinces and cities nationwide with a total value of nearly VND8 billion.


As scheduled, two full scholarships worth VND10 million each will be granted to two students from Thai Nguyen and Hanoi on April 10.

That’s win helped Viet Nam to stand first in the team event, followed by the hosts Thailand.


At the same event held two years ago, Nguyen Thuy Dung had won the overall yellow jersey.


The Tour of Thailand is part of the International Cycling Union’s competition system.


Bhutan leap 46 places in FIFA rankings, Vietnam jump to 125th


Bhutan jumped 46 places from the foot of the FIFA rankings to 163rd on April 9 after recording their first ever World Cup qualifying victories.


The Himalayan nation beat Sri Lanka 1-0 in Colombo and 2-1 in Thimphu last month to advance to the second round of Asian qualifying and, after reaching their highest ranking, will be among the fourth seeds for April 7’s draw.


Vietnam are among the second seeds, standing at the 125th, up five places from the March rankings.


Anguilla replaced Bhutan as FIFA’s 209th and lowest ranked international side after losing 8-0 on aggregate to Nicaragua in the first round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying last month.


Iran, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Australia, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, China and Iraq were confirmed as the top seeds for the Asian draw, where 40 teams are split into eight groups of five in the latest stage of Asia’s long road to Russia 2018.


At the top of the FIFA rankings, World Cup winners Germany remain first and Argentina second, but Belgium moved above Colombia into third after their Euro 2016 qualifying wins over Cyprus and Israel last month.


Brazil went fifth after they continued their resurgence under Dunga with a 3-1 friendly win in Paris against France and 1-0 success over Chile in London.


France (11th) and Italy (13th) dropped out of the top 10 with Switzerland (ninth) and Spain (10th) moving back in.


Phuong wins gold at IWF Youth World Championships


Le Khong My Phuong won a gold medal at the 2015 IWF Youth World Championships held in Lima, Peru, yesterday (Viet Nam time).


Phuong lifted 70kg in the snatch category of the women’s 44kg discipline to take gold, followed by Chinese athlete Gao Yimei who lifted 67kg.


In the clean and jerk category, Phuong ranked fifth with her lift of 76kg.


However, she lifted 146kg in total to gain one more silver medal.


Yimei won two gold medals in the clean and jerk category (88kg) and total lift (155kg).


In the men’s 50kg category, Le Nguyen Quoc Bao won two silver medals and one bronze medal.


Next, Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan and Ly Quang Vinh will compete in the men’s 56kg event.


Viet Nam has sent four athletes to take part in the tournament, which will end on Sunday.


Dat, Trang to compete in Luxembourg Open

The sporting event will be held at the “Centre National Sportif et Culturel” in Luxembourg-Kirchberg next Wednesday.


Luxembourg will finance the players who will compete in the team and singles events.


Coach Nguyen Nam Hai will lead the Vietnamese team at the championships, which will end next Saturday.


PepsiCo Viet Nam to sponsor HCM City volleyball team


The HCM City Volleyball Federation has signed a one-year sponsorship deal with PepsiCo Viet Nam in HCM City.


The company will sponsor the federation VND1.2 billion (US$57,000) for the municipal women’s volleyball team at the 2015 National Volleyball Championships.


The championships will start on Sunday and run until November 28.
