Hai Duong’s female players played steadily and excitingly and beat their strong rivals to step on the glorious dais for the first time.
Athlete Le Thi Hong played outstandingly, helping Hai Duong RUDICO team win the title
“The title was quite a surprise to us. This is really an exploit, a historical landmark after more than 20 years of professional women’s volleyball of Hai Duong,” said Vu Dinh Thinh, Director of the Provincial Center for Sports Training and Coaching.
Concussion
Though several months had passed, joy mixed with pride in the championship at the 2014 National Young Volleyball Club Tournament still shows up brightly on the face of coaches and athletes of Hai Duong RUDICO team.
Before the tournament, the Hai Duong team were not highly rated. However, the further Hai Duong players went at the tournament, the better they played in each match, and they gradually appeared to be candidates for the championship.
Hai Duong had a decisive match with very strong competitors, Lienvietposbank, in the semifinals. Vigorously and efficiently playing in each defensive as well as offensive moment, the team outstandingly booked a ticket to the final.
Surpassing the strong rivals, Hai Duong’s female players were more confident, played steadily and excitingly, and beat VTV Binh Dien Long An in the final to step on the glorious dais for the first time.
The audience at Phu Tho Provincial Gymnasium was stunned by and admired the Hai Duong team’s victory. The team were convincingly crowned champions after striking down the most formidable opponents one after another, shaking the national volleyball circle.
Training breakthroughs
Success is the result of daily hard training
The championship of the Hai Duong young women’s volleyball team was not a matter of chance. It was sound investment in and development of the training and coaching of Hai Duong province’s young athletes that made the provincial girls’ resounding victory.
To professionalize the training and coaching of young athletes, the Provincial Center for Sports Training and Coaching in 2011 realized the project “Training young female volleyball athletes in the 2011 – 2015 period”. The project focuses on working out a development plan and route and standards for assessing the quality of each specific training period, creating the unity of time and selection criteria.
At present, the training of young athletes is being implemented in short-term training and target lines. Promising young athletes are trained with the team.
To select athletes of good build and talent, the center has closely associated with the educational and training sector and district cultural and sport centers in detection and introduction. Coaches have come to schools for selection. Only a few dozen pupils are chosen from thousands of pupils screened in each selection phase.
“Since the implementation of the project, young athletes have made marked progress in build, physical strength, technical qualification, and tactical thinking. To date, the young line has provided eight athletes and become the cadre of the women’s team,” said Vu Dinh Thinh.
The factor creating the success of training and coaching young athletes is a team of coaches who are always enthusiastic and responsible, and especially spend time and effort in selecting talented young athletes.
Finding a gifted athlete is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Nguyen Quang Vinh, former coach of the young female volleyball team, still remembers the hardships to retain outstanding athlete Le Thi Hong at the center for training.
“Hong lives in Quoc Tuan commune, Nam Sach, and started training at the center in mid 2009, when she was a 7th grader. Hong is naturally shy and had never been away from home, so her mother had to sleep with her nearly the whole first week,” said Vinh.
“After her mother returned home, Hong turned towards the gate expecting her mother after every afternoon training time and often cried alone. Hong’s family asked to stop her training many times.
“One day, after the whole team had finished eating, I did not see Hong when checking the athletes. Guessing Hong had returned to her house, I rode a motorbike to road 5. When reaching Phu Luong bridge, I saw Hong trying to run.
“Unable to persuade her to return to the center, I carried her home when it was past 9pm. Persuaded and encouraged by her family, Hong returned to train with the team the next morning.”
Athletes in the team are educated and cared for in all aspects. They are also educated that love and attachment to volleyball are missions for their native land with the spirit of determinedly playing for their colors as well as the desire to win sown into them. The road to the team’s success was not laid with “roses” but hard training, sweat, and tears.
