Leaders of thirteen Vietnamese, Lao, and Thai localities have met in Vietnam to discuss ways to foster their cooperation.
Representatives from eight Vietnamese localities, including Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Binh Dinh, Quang Ngai, Da Nang, and Hanoi; three Lao provinces, namely Champasak, Attapeu, and Sekong; and two Thai provinces, Ubon Ratchathani and Sisaket, attended the meeting in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum on Thursday, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
The participants agreed that the key fields of cooperation among their localities are investment, trade, and tourism, with the last playing the central role.
They pledged to strengthen the exploration of each other’s potential and engage in common partnership mechanisms to build mutually beneficial cooperative programs.
Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand are currently facing dramatic changes to their environment and climate, thus a closer connection between them is significant to promote activities for socio-economic, cultural, and tourism development, Deputy Governor of Ubon Ratchathani Province Suraphan Ditxaman said.
Kenthong Sysouvong, deputy governor of Attapeu Province, expressed his belief that the cooperation will help boost tourism development in all three countries.
Ta Quy, deputy head of the Office of the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, suggested that the Lao and Thai provinces adopt more policies favorable for investors and tourists to boost investment and tourism cooperation.
The gathering passed a Kon Tum Statement that specifies their determination to work more closely to beef up cooperation for mutual development.
They also agreed to consider expanding their cooperative network by allowing the participation of a fourth country and other financial institutions and organizations.
