Ly Hoang Nam, 18, holds the cup as he poses for a photo with his Swedish coach Christian Brydniak.
Ly Hoang Nam has claimed the top title at the 25th Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup Junior Tennis Championship, becoming the first Vietnamese player to win an international junior event.
The 18-year-old, ranked 49th by ITF, had an easy 6-3 and 6-0 win over South Korea’s Chan Yeong Oh, ranked 31st, in the men’s singles final on Sunday in Malaysia.
Nam said he and his coach Christian Brydniak had prepared well before the match.
“Oh had swift moves and maintained good speed. I did not try to make him move but wait for chances to attack,” he said.
Earlier, Nam and Alberto Lim claimed the men’s doubles title after defeating Chinese Wu Hao and Wu Yibing 7-6 and 6-2.
With two titles, Nam is expected to gain at least 100 points and advance to the top 30 of junior players in ITF’s ranking.
He will join the national team to compete at the Asia Pacific’s Group 3 for the Davis Cup, which will take place on March 25 in Malaysia.
