Japanese traditional puppet shows to be performed for free in Hanoi

Several Japanese traditional puppet shows will be performed in Hanoi for free this weekend, newswire Vietnamplus reported Tuesday.

The performances, supported by the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam (JPF) in co-ordination with the Youth Theater and Vietnam Puppetry Theater, will take place at 2:00 pm on March 21 and 22 at 361 Truong Chinh Street in Thanh Xuan District.

The events will feature traditional puppet shows of Japan performed by artists from the Youkiza Marionette Theater and are open to audiences, especially puppet lovers, for free on a first come first served basis.

A workshop, in which Japanese artists will interact with local audiences and introduce Japanese puppet art, is scheduled to take place on March 23.

According to the organizers, the puppet show featuring a lion character, which will be presented to Vietnamese audiences, is often performed during the New Year festival, with the aim of dispelling disease and evil.

The Youkiza Marionette Theater was founded in 1635 by Youki Magosaburō I; and is presently run by Youki Magosaburō XII, meaning the company has enjoyed a history of 380 years.

It is a national Important Intangible Folk-Cultural Property and Intangible Cultural Property of Tokyo, JPF said in its press release issued on March 17.
