PANO – An English training course for 36 officers of the Vietnam People’s Army was kicked off on the morning of March 23rd, in Hanoi.

The course was part of the program funded and operated by the UK Ministry of Defence and the British Council for the Vietnamese army officers. The 36 officers will experience a 6-9 month training course depending on their screening results.

At the end of the course, the officers will have been equipped with sufficient English language skills to join specialized courses held by the UK Ministry of Defence. Most potential trainees will be nominated for the training courses for high-ranking officers offered at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom in Shriveham. Trainees are expected to be competent to join UN peacekeeping operations after the course.

Over the past time, many Vietnamese officers have attended English training courses sponsored by the UK Ministry of Defence and the British Council. However, this time, the course is of greater significance as Vietnam is beefing up its participation in UN peacekeeping operations.

It is hoped that in the coming time, the Vietnam People’s Army in general and the Vietnam Peacekeeping Center in particular will receive more support in language training and other fields from the UK Ministry of Defence.
