Construction began Tuesday for a new bridge linking Ho Chi Minh City downtown and Thu Thiem, an up-and-coming suburb in District 2.

The Thu Thiem 2 Bridge over the Saigon River is 1.5 kilometers long and has six lanes.

The bridge is expected to boost development of the Thu Thiem new urban area and reduce traffic congestion in the city.

It will be built under the build-operate-transfer investment model with cooperation between state and private investors.

Construction costs are estimated at VND3.082 trillion (US$144.4 million).

The construction of the bridge is likely to require part of the Ba Son Shipyard in District 1 to be relocated.

Dai Quang Minh Real Estate Investment JSC, the investor of the project, said the bridge is expected to be finished in April 2018.

Construction time can be reduced if the Ba Son Shipyard could finish site clearance work earlier.
