Police in the capital city of Hanoi have sought to press charges against a Communist Party official who allegedly introduced a personal friend to a man accused of orchestrating a brazen daylight slaying in Hanoi last year.
Le Trung Kien, who was arrested in August 2014 as deputy head of a committee tasked with personnel-related matters at the Cau Giay District Party Unit, is facing murder charges along with three other people. It is now up to the municipal prosecutors’ agency to ratify the charges.
The police accuse Kien of brokering an introduction that ended in the fatal stabbing of a Hanoi businessman on a crowded Hanoi street on August 5, 2014.
Police said Nguyen Quoc Van, 54, and Kien, 43, have been close friend since childhood. After learning that Van was having trouble with a wealthy moneylender named Kieu Ngoc Thanh, Kien allegedly brokered an introduction to a man named Nguyen Kim Binh.
Police say Van paid Binh to “threaten” Thanh, the 55-year old businessman who had lent Van more than VND2 billion (US$94,000) he couldn’t pay back. Instead, Binh allegedly hired two men whom police say ultimately committed the murder. While in custody, the hitmen and his getaway driver reportedly snitched on Van and Binh.
Binh and the two alleged hitmen are also facing murder charges. The police seek to charge Van with “harboring criminals”, without elaborating.
