US Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius on Thursday visited Hue, where he showed his interest in the scenery and the rich culinary culture of the former imperial city.


Some local chefs showed Osius how to make bún bò Huế, the city’s signature spicy soup with rice noodles and beef.


He finished all the steps of the complex cooking himself.


“Tuyet voi, tuyet voi, rat thom,” (Excellent, smells so good) Osisus said, adding that he was so surprised by the number of ingredients in the dish.


Bun bo Hue is the specialty of Hue, and is also its pride. We greatly appreciate Hue’s traditional cuisine, Hue’s culture, Hue’s history, and Hue’s people,” Osius said in fluent Vietnamese.


“Today, we have such a great chance to learn how to cook and to enjoy such a proud dish.”


The ambassador was on a visiting trip to grant a US$700,000 fund for the preservation of the Trieu temple, which was built inside the Hue citadel in 1804.


The temple is the place to worship the ancestors of the Nguyen Dynasty.
