The glass cabinet of Dong Tien gold shop in Binh Dinh Province was broken in the heist.

A gold shop in Binh Dinh Province was robbed for the third time in the past 10 years on Monday.

The case happened at around 7:30 a.m. when a man suddenly came in and broke the glass cabinet at the Dong Tien Gold Shop, grabbing a large amount of jewelry before fleeing on a motorbike with his accomplice.

The shop owner, 46-year-old Truong Van Duoc, called for help and many local residents and police joined the chase.

After driving for more than ten kilometers, the two robbers abandoned their vehicle and disappeared.

Police later found one of the suspects, 31-year-old Nguyen Dong Son, at a café nearby.

Son denied the accusation at first, but had to confess to the crime after a local found his jacket with the jewelry, hidden in a bush.

Police said there were 14 gold chain necklaces valuing more than VND340 million (US$15,935).

They did not confirm if that was all the jewelry taken from the shop.

Police are investigating the case and looking for Son’s accomplice.

It was the third time the shop was robbed, Binh Dinh newspaper reported.

In a very similar case last June, a young man broke the shop’s glass cabinet with a stone, stealing VND450 million worth of jewelry before fleeing on a motorbike without a license plate.

Duoc said the stolen jewelry has not been retrieved since.

Around ten years ago, the shop was also robbed, he said.
