Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Party Committee, local authority and people of Nghe An and Ha Tinh held a solemn ceremony to receive the UNESCO’s certificate recognizing Vi- Giam folk singing as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity at Ho Chi Minh Square in Nghe An’s Vinh city on January 31.

Attending at the important ceremony was Chairman of National Assembly of Vietnam Nguyen Sinh Hung and representative of UNESCO in Vietnam and head of the UNESCO Hanoi office Katherine Muller Marin.
Speaking at the ceremony, head of the UNESCO Hanoi office Katherine Muller Marin affirmed that nomination file of Vi-Giam fully met five of ten criteria set by UNESCO to become an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The nomination file was appreciated by members of Administration Committee on protection of intangible cultural heritage.
UNESCO hoped that the Vietnamese Glovernment in general and people of Nghe An and Ha Tinh province in particular would continue to implement effective measures in order to preserve and enhance values of Vi- Giam folk singing, and build a national action program to develop the heritage.
After announcement and certification ceremony, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh announced the national action program on preserving and improving values of the type of folk singing.
Vi-Giam became the ninth Vietnamese cultural practice receiving UNESCO’s intangible heritage status.
The other eight types were recognized by UNESCO, including Hue’s royal court music, Gong space culture in Central Highlands, the northern province of Bac Ninh’s love duet singing, the Giong festival, Ca Tru ceremonial singing, Xoan singing, Don Ca Tai Tu music and the worship of Hung Kings.
Within the framework of the ceremony, series of art performances relating to Vi- Giam folk singing were displayed, aiming to not only introduce more about the heritage but also to boost the traditional folk type to people nationwide and international friends. The art program was a favorable opportunity for the public to take part in cultural exchange activities with researchers, artists in the field of folk culture and music.
Researcher Dang Hoanh Loan said that one of major criteria recognizing Vi- Giam folk singing as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity has been being its preservation from generation to generation as well as reflection of work and cultural life of people in the provinces.
Vi-Giam is a traditional folk singing without music, which has been existing for hundreds of year. Vi-Giam folk singing is performed in working and daily life, especially, it appeares also popularly in mothers’ lullabies. This type of folk singing plays an important role in the cultural and spiritual life of Nghe – Tinh.
