Defining that power development must go one step ahead to meet socio-economic development requirements, Southern Power Corporation (EVN SPC) has spared no effort to meet power demand for people and ensure the unremitting electricity current for the cause of industrialisation, modernisation and prosperity of the country. Vietnam Business Forum has an interview with Nguyen Thanh Duy, General Director of EVN SPC, to learn about these achievements. Van Luong reports.Could you briefly introduce EVN SPC’s production, business and investment activities in recent years?
Since its operation on May 1, 1975, EVN SPC has undergone nearly 40 years of construction and development, from serving 2.5 percent of households with access to electricity with a consumption of 1.25 billion kWh to 98.63 percent of households, consuming 40 billion kWh a year now. Over the past years, EVN SPC always exceeds its assigned targets and tasks. The corporation always ensured adequate power supply for production and business operations of enterprises and livelihoods of the people to effectively serve the socio- economic development of 21 provinces and cities in the south of Vietnam; invested in grid projects for areas with high power demand like 110-kV Ha Tien – Phu Quoc undersea line project (switched on February 1, 2014) to bring the national electricity grid to Phu Quoc Island, Kien Giang province; a project to supply electricity for mountainous villages in Lam Dong province; a project to supply electricity for households, mainly Khmer, in Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh and Kien Giang provinces; a project to provide electricity for shrimp farms in Ca Mau province and pumping stations in An Giang province; and projects to supply new residential zones and industrial parks.
EVN SPC has applied new technologies to improve labour quality and productivity, like installing highly accurate power meters with remote monitoring and recording functions; deploying 100kV Scada power network administration system and 110kV unmanned substations. The corporation has also focused on customer service and personnel training to meet new development trends in the process of international integration.
With its outstanding achievements and great contributions to the process of national construction in the past time, EVN SPC has been honoured with many awards and titles by the Party, the State and the Government, including the “Labour hero in the renovation era” title in 2005. And, in 2014, on the occasion of the 60th founding anniversary of electricity industry, EVN SPC honourably received the First-class Independence Order. This was a prestigious award that the Party and the State bestowed on the corporation’s officers and staff for their endeavours for the cause of national construction and protection.
On this occasion, six members of EVN SPC were also decorated with Third-class Independence Orders, namely PC Binh Duong, PC Binh Thuan, PC Can Tho, PC Lam Dong, PC Long An and PC Soc Trang; one First-class Labour Order for PC Ca Mau; Second-grade Labour Orders for seven individuals and two collectives, namely PC Vinh Long and PC Bao Loc (affiliated to PC Lam Dong); and Third-class Labour Orders for 32 individual and 15 collectives, namely PC Hau Giang, Southern Power Project Management, PC Vinh Loi (PC Bac Lieu), PC Di An (PC Binh Duong), PC Phu Quy (PC Binh Thuan), PC Dong Phu (PC Binh Phuoc), PC My Tu and PC Long Phu (PC Soc Trang).
Currently, the electricity demand for production and livelihood is on the rise. How does EVN SPC plan to meet the demand?
As a power distributor and trader, EVN SPC’s main task is to work with Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) Group to ensure national energy security. To meet the growing power demand, EVN SPC is actively implementing measures: Following power supply guarantee solutions of the EVN and the Ministry of Industry and Trade; and coordinating with People’s Committees of southern provinces and cities to build annual and monthly power supply plans for EVN SPC and member units; enhancing power supply administration efficiency; safely and efficiently operating power systems; improving grid reliability; working with high-voltage (110kV) users on solutions to power supply, regulation and economisation; carrying out power work restoration, repairing and maintenance plans; preventing natural disasters and disease outbreaks; and preparing enough material and equipment to respond to emergent cases.
EVN SPC will proactively maximise the operating capacity of small and medium hydropower sources in Lam Dong, Ninh Thuan, Binh Phuoc, Ba Ria – Vung Tau, Soc Trang and Tay Ninh; speeding up safe and effective power saving and use programmes like solar power; ensuring the progress and quality of power project construction like 220-kV Can Duoc Station and 220-kV Long Xuyen 2 Station to turn on the switch in 2015; completing the rural energy efficiency improvement project funded by Germany KfW Bank; completing the commencement on 110-kV items belonging to Distribution Efficiency Project (DEP) funded by the World Bank (WB) in 2014, and completing the construction of 310 km of 110kV lines.
In addition to effective production and business activities, EVN SPC is also known as an active unit in charity and social security activities. Would you talk more about this?
Corporate culture has a special role and importance to the sustainable development of a company. It is like a mirror reflecting the successes as well as responsibilities of the company to its employees and to the community. Therefore, all activities of EVN SPC are for humans, including partners, customers, the society and our employees. That is the code of conduct of EVN SPC in particular and of the electricity industry in general.
