Vietnamese rescuers saved an 89-year-old American tourist aboard a US cruise ship after he had a heart attack Sunday.
The Da Nang Maritime Rescue Coordination Center said at 7:40 p.m. it received a distress signal from the Seven Seas Voyager, which was on its northbound journey from the Chan May Port in central Vietnam to Quang Ninh Province, home to the world-renowned Ha Long Bay.
The cruise ship was some 30 nautical miles from Da Nang when the tourist, known only as Ross, had a heart attack.
Doctors of a local hospital provided the ship’s crew with first aid instructions over the phone.
The rescue mission had some difficulties in approaching the cruise ship due to strong winds and rogue waves.
But at around 11:30 p.m. rescuers finally brought the tourist ashore and rushed him to Da Nang Hospital.
He suffered from chest pains and fatigue but could still talk.
He is reportedly in a stable condition now.
