The World Bank (WB) will open its representative office in Kuala Lumpur under an agreement it signed on January 27 with the Government of Malaysia.

At the signing ceremony, Second Minister of Finance Dato’ Seri Ahmad Husni Mohamad Hanadzlah said the office, which will begin operation in the next two months, will serve as a research centre, enabling Malaysia to share its experience with other countries while benefiting from the WB’s international expertise.

He said the office will undertake research on key development areas as well as global indicators for the WB Doing Business Report.

Meanwhile, WB Vice President for East Asia Axel van Trotsenburg said the office marks a new chapter in the relationship between the bank and Malaysia.

He also praised Malaysia for its strong financial and capitalised banking systems as well as the way the country has revived after the international financial crisis in 2008.-VNA
