Im Seung Woo (L) and Lee Yong Hu are among the Koreans arrested on January 23, 2015 for operating gambling sites targeting players back home.
Vietnam on Friday deported six South Korean nationals who operated gambling websites that had around 4,000 users from their own country.
The Koreans, mostly in their 30s, were arrested Wednesday at a villa in the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau, local media reported.
They confessed that they worked for another Korean named Choi Hojun, 39, who sent them to Vietnam, where they operated the gambling sites targeting Korean players.
Hojun had been staying at the same villa but managed to escape before the raid, police said.
A source from Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security said after investigators detected signs of criminal activities at the villa, they asked South Korean police to join the mission.
The South Korean embassy in Vietnam on January 13 confirmed that the Koreans were providing online gambling service, which is illegal under Korean laws.
Three Korean investigators were then sent to Vietnam to help with the raid. They have taken the suspects home.
Gambling is also illegal in Vietnam.
Last year Ho Chi Minh City deported 14 South Koreans after fining them $470-940 each for operating an online sports betting site.
