embattled state agency in charge of railway management in the country.
The Ministry of Transport said in a press release that Thang, 60, was found collapsed in his office by a janitor around 7 p.m. Thursday.
His family, police and medical officers arrived at the scene immediately but he was already dead.
Lao Dong (Labor) newspaper reported that Thang allegedly hanged himself.
Another source said Thang was found bending on his knees on the floor, dead, and there were scratches on his neck. It also said police found a wire in his office.
However, the transport ministry refused to confirm any of these claims.
According to the press release, Thang came to work as usual in the morning and attended scheduled meetings with leaders of the ministry in the afternoon.
It also said Thang had not showed any “unusual signs” recently.
Thang was assigned to be head of the Vietnam Railway Authority in June 2010.
In April of last year, he was suspended for 15 days for “wrong and irresponsible comments” that he made about broad public criticism following media reports of problems in a long-stalled elevated railway project in Hanoi.
