As the Lunar New Year is approaching, people living in Ho Chi Minh City are reminding each other to put more layers on when they go out since the southern city has seen falling temperatures recently.
The temperature has occasionally dropped to 18 degrees Celsius in the wee hours at a time when locals are poised to celebrate the Lunar New Year, which is called “Tet” in Vietnamese.
Tet falls on February 19 this year, with festive preparations beginning around one week before the date and the celebratory atmosphere lingering another week after that.
The low temperatures have caused unusual weather which many people deem “interesting,” as it is not common to feel cold in this tropical city.
People say they now can enjoy the cold of Hanoi or the Central Highlands city of Da Lat right in the middle of Ho Chi Minh City, which is usually considered one of the hottest cities in Vietnam.
Some feel that the city is now experiencing the most wonderful days, calling this time its most beautiful season, as more often than not it is surrounded by uncomfortable heat, smoke, and pollution.
Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper provides a glance at life in Ho Chi Minh City during the cool weather:
