A Vietnamese passenger is set to stand trial in Australia for attempting to open the emergency exit on board a Vietnam Airlines flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Sydney on Monday.

It took a group of passengers to overpower the reportedly panicked Vietnamese man and tied him to a seat with cable ties, according to media reports.

The flight had been airborne for around two hours when passengers reported hearing panicked screaming, news website MailOnline, the news website of British newspaper Daily Mail, reported Wednesday.

According to MailOnline, New Zealander Mark Ansley claimed he and a group of fellow fliers were forced to physically subdue the man, who had begun to kick the emergency exit, attempting to jump out of the plane.

The man, who had become agitated, was reportedly claiming he had been kidnapped and drugged, and that there were people in Sydney waiting to kill him, MailOnline said.

It quoted Ansley, who was flying home to his six-year-old son, as saying that he believed the passenger was in some sort of drug-induced state. Ansley said he and the other passengers tied the man to some seats, and tried to find out if he was travelling with anyone.

Ansley told New Zealand broadcaster TVNZ: “A cable tie was handed to me and I couldn’t get it around his hands because he was fighting too much, so that’s why I decided to stun him or knock him out, which didn’t work”.

“But eventually I did stun him enough to stop him struggling. It was very scary, I was really shaken. Its fight or flight isn’t it, and I tend to flight,” he said.

Police boarded the plane and arrested the man at Sydney Airport, Australia’s ONENews said.

MailOnline quoted the Australian Federal Police as saying that the man, whose identity is not known yet, had an initial medical assessment at St George Hospital and was then issued a notice to appear in court for endangering the safety of an aircraft.

He is due to appear at Downing Center Court on December 16, it said.

Vietnam Airlines are now taking statements from staff on board the plane.

Incidents of passengers attempting to open and opening emergency exit doors before takeoff are reported quite frequently in Vietnam. But an attempt to do so when the plane has been airborne for hours appears to be rare.
