Police in the north-central province of Nghe An are searching for three men who fled the scene of a a shootout that claimed the wife of a known gangster and injured two innocent bystanders on Tuesday night.
Nguyen Thi Hang, 32, was killed by a series of gun shots at around 9 p.m. in the house her family rented on Tran Hung Dao Street.
The gunfight spilled out onto the street where stray bullets injured two street cleaners Dang Van Chung, a man, and Dinh Thi Chung, a woman.
Three assailants — two men armed with knives and another carrying a gun — fled the scene in a four-seater car.
Police say the men drove to the house, armed, hoping to resolve a standing beef with Tuan, Hang’s husband, a known member of the criminal underworld.
Hang is survived by two children, the youngest of whom is less than a year old.
Chung the female street cleaner was severely injured by shots that perforated her lungs, stomach and both arms.
She remains in the intensive care unit at Nghe An General Hospital while the male victim was discharged Wednesday morning with a bandage on his left wrist.
The 24-year-old street sweeper said they were waiting for a dump truck to pick up their haul on the sidewalk, around 50 meters from where the shooting broke out.
He recalled seeing five or six people run out of Hang’s place before the shooting continued.
“I immediately felt pain in my left wrist, while Chung said her forehead hurt and she was bleeding a lot.”
“We were standing very close to each other, but I was luckier.”
