The trees were presented to Dien Bien province by Japan’s Dotoku Kaikan to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relations and the 60th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory.

The event also intended to commemorate Vietnamese General Vo Nguyen Giap and strengthen the good friendship between Vietnam and Japan.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman of Dotoku Kaikan, Takashi Aoki said that 2014 is the year to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory. The planting of cherry blossom trees on the heroic grounds of Dien Bien aims to express the belief in world peace.

He added that upon seeing cherry blossom trees growing in Dien Bien Phu, everyone would have the same wish for the disappearance of wars and disasters and peace for all people.

Japanese cherry blossom trees have been planted in Muong Phang since 2006 where the climate and soil are suitable for growing the flower.

The provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development also held a pilot cherry blossom planting at Pang Hoc international border gate and Tay Trang border gate.
