For the 2014-15 coffee crop, the Highlands province of Dak Lak will focus on applying intensive farming methods as well as replanting old coffee trees to improve productivity and quality, in an aim to meet export demand.


The province’s total coffee area for the next crop is expected to be 203,000ha, with an average yield of 2.4 tonnes per ha, offering a total of 450,000 tonnes.

5.5 million tonnes of rice exported


Enterprises have exported 5.5 million tonnes of rice for a value of nearly US$2.4 billion this year, according to the Viet Nam Food Association.



This was a reduction of nearly 400,000 tonnes and $120 million compared to the same period last year. Average export prices, however, were $6 a tonne higher than last year’s price.

Deadline for new driver’s licence extended


The Ministry of Transport has extended the deadline to replace current automobile driver’s licences with new ones that use PVC plastic to the end of next year.


According to the Viet Nam Road Administration, of the total 4.2 million automobile-driver licences nationwide, only 2.2 million have been converted to new ones.


For existing motorbike driving licences, those issued before 2003 are required to change by the end of 2016.

Dong Thap invests in dredging canals


The Cuu Long (Mekong) Province of Dong Thap will set aside VND21.7 billion (US$1.01 million) to invest in seven projects to dredge a combined 35,519m of canals in Cao Lanh city, and districts of Chau Thanh, Cao Lanh, Lai Vung, Lap Vo, Tan Hong, and Thanh Binh.


The projects are the second phase of a larger project to prevent drought and salt water intrusion in the province.

Steering committee for tea industry set up


The steering committee for sustainable development of the tea industry made its debut on November 17 in Ha Noi.


The committee will assist the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in devising solutions and policies as well as mobilising resources to boost sustainable development of the industry.


The 14-member committee is headed by the ministry’s deputy minister Le Quoc Doanh.
