Doctors in the north-central province of Nghe An say the man who had two iron tines removed from his brain is recovering well.
Thai Van Tu, 35, was admitted to Nghe An General Hospital in the namesake province on the night of September 22 with two iron bars protruding from the top of his head, news website VnExpress reported.
Tu was unconscious and had lost a lot of blood. The bars had penetrated nearly nine centimeters into his brain.
Dr Hoang Hoa Tham, head of the hospital’s spinal and neurological department, told VnExpress on Sunday that Tu is still alive thanks to an emergency surgery performed by a team of four doctors.
“The surgery took more than two hours and successfully removed [the bars] from the patient’s brain,” Tham said.
He said the surgery was the first of its kind ever conducted at the hospital.
“It’s extremely difficult and the success seemed unlikely at the time,” he said.
Tu said, as lying on his sickbed, that he and a friend, named Thang, 38, quarreled while drinking alcohol.
Thang suddenly ran into a local house and grasped a rake to hit Tu on the head.
Two of the prongs ended up stucking in his head.
Tu received first aid at Ha Tinh Hospital near his home in the neighboring eponymous province and was being rushed to Hanoi when the family decided to stop en route in the Nghe An Province.
They feared he wouldn’t survive the journey to the capital city.
Ha Tinh police have summoned Thang to investigate the cause.
