Police in the central province of Nghe An detected more thanone metric ton of Chinese-made toys of dubious origin in the provincial capital city of Vinh on Wednesday.
A car was unloading 48 cardboard boxes of children’s toys on Tran Nhat Duat Street when officers arrived and asked for papers related to the products.
The car’s driver, Nguyen Van Tau, from central Phu Yen Province, failed to show any invoices or receipts for the goods, police said.
The 46-year-old driver confessed to police that he had been hired by a woman in the northern province of Quang Ninh to transfer the toys to a businessman in Vinh for the Mid-Autumn Festival.
The toys include plastic water guns, spintops, stuffed animals, and lanterns, all made in China, according to officers.
Mid-Autumn Festival, celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month in the Vietnamese calendar, is also known as the Children’s Festival, making it fertile soil for illicit children’s toys.
While this year’s festival falls on September 8, market watchdog agencies countrywide have detected and seized a number of children’s toys illicitly brought to the country, mostly from China.
On Monday, customs and market management officers in Quang Ninh and Lang Son Provinces in the north caught as many as eight trucks carrying a wide variety of illegal goods from China heading for Hanoi.
The products include toy guns that look identical to real ones, which were to be sold during the Children’s Festival, according to officers.
On July 30, a market management team in the capital city also found more than 2,700 toy products without papers at a warehouse in Hoan Kiem District.
All of the products originated from China and were stockpiled for the Mid-Autumn Festival, Hanoi police said.
