Man jumps into lake after giving money away

Vietnamese police and rescuers are searching for a man who suddenly jumped into a lake in Hanoi and has gone missing since Wednesday evening after he gave money to others and left a bag of money at a local café.

At 8:30 pm yesterday, a man stood up in a café on Ho Dac Di Street in Nam Dong Ward, Dong Da District, where he had stayed for five hours, left a bag on a table, and stepped out.

He then slid a lot of Vietnamese banknotes into the hands of many people he saw accidentally outside the café.

After the odd action, the man came over to the Dac Di Lake across the street and jumped into it to the big surprise of all witnesses.

Local police and rescuers were called to the scene immediately to handle the incident.

Ten professional divers with various means, including drag-nets and a night vision camera, tried to locate the victim but failed, said Senior Lieutenant Colonel Do Van Cuong, who commanded the rescue force.

The bag the man left behind was found containing about VND30 million (over US$1,400) in cash.

The search for the victim is ongoing.
