A high-ranking official from the Ministry of Public Security and two colleagues were killed Tuesday morning as a vehicle lost control and crashed into theirs.

Lieutenant General Nguyen Xuan Tu, deputy head of the ministry’s Force Construction Department, was killed on the spot when the accident happened at around 7:20 a.m. in Hung Yen Province, which is outside Hanoi.

Two other ministry officers traveling with him on the seven-seat car on the way from Hanoi to Hai Phong were also killed, and another injured.

Driver of the bus that rammed them has been arrested for further probe.

Initial investigation said the 47-seat bus was running on the opposite direction before it lost control and ran over the street divider to hit the officer’s car.

A source from the ministry’s Road Traffic Department said the officers were on an official trip.

As of Tuesday afternoon, an official from the National Committee of Traffic Safety told Tuoi Tre they have been informed of the accident by various sources, but have not received official report from the ministry yet.

Road accidents kill thousands in Vietnam every year and surged during every long holiday break such as the on-going four-day holiday, as the Independence Day (September 2) this year falls Tuesday and closes to the weekend.

Official figures show during the first three days of the holiday, from August 30 to September 1, a total of 123 traffic accidents took place across the country, killing 66 people and injuring 70 others.
