A group of foreigners including tourists and expatriates have just finished celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival in Vietnam in a way that cannot be more memorable: acting in a Vietnamese play in front of local kids.

Around 20 foreigners joined the “Cuoi len, cac em oi!” (Be all smiles, kids!) event in Le Minh Xuan Commune in Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday as a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration for children in the area.
The international friends come from Malaysia, Colombia, England, and the U.S.
Besides presenting notebooks, pens, cakes, and money to over 300 children living in the poor commune, the foreigners played “Cay Da va Chu Cuoi” (The Buffalo Boy and The Banyan Tree), a local folk tale that tells the story of a boy who flies to the immense sky to catch his magic tree and spends the rest of his life there, in Vietnamese.
The buffalo boy (played by Ashlin Aronin from the U.S.) and his wife (acted by Diana Barrios from Colombia) brought the children an enjoyable and meaningful night with shrieks of laughter thanks to their natural acting.
“This is the first time I have acted in a Vietnamese play. I am happy when seeing the children enjoy my performance. I hope that I can come back to Ho Chi Minh City next year to partake in another Mid-Autumn Festival celebration,” Aronin said.
As part of the event, the foreigners also had a chance to learn about the Vietnamese Mid-Autumn traditions such as lantern parade, dragon dance and “pha co,” a ceremony in which people prepare fruits on a table and perform some rituals before sharing and enjoying them.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is due on Monday, which is the 15th day of the 8th month in the Vietnamese calendar, but celebrations have been held during the past few days in Vietnam.
