Fibre cable damage slows internet speeds again

(VOV) – Internet speeds in Vietnam are for the second time in the past three months, severely disrupted as a result of a cut to the Asia-America Gateway (AAG) undersea cable system.

The Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) reports the cable suffered severe damage at 11.26pm on September 15, resulting in a 40% decrease in connection speed on international internet broadband from Vietnam to Hong Kong and the US.

The VNPT is working with the AAG system management board to repair the cable as quickly as possible. The group has taken remedial steps of adding broadband on alternative sea optical cables as a stopgap measure to keep the system running, while it indentifies and fixes the root cause of the problem.

Most recently, the AAG optical cable system had been damaged on July 15. It took 12 days for completion of repairs and for the system to resume normal operations.
