Nhan Dan Online – A conference debating measures to catch and export tuna was held in Tuy Hoa city in Phu Yen province on the morning of September 13 under the chair of Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Cao Duc Phat.

The conference attracted the attendance of more than 100 representatives from People’s Committees and Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development from three provinces, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa, along with fishermen and tuna traders from the three provinces.

According to the Directorate of Fisheries, tuna catching and export is playing a key role in the fisheries sector of the three provinces with more than 3,600 tuna boats and a total capacity of 16,000 tonnes per year.

Vietnamese tuna products have been exported to 99 countries across the world with the EU, the US and Japan constituting its main markets. Tuna export revenue has increased strongly in recent years from US$188 million in 2008, to US$569 million in 2012. and US$526 million in 2013.

However, the quality of caught tuna is very modest. In Binh Dinh, only 25% of tuna meet export standards to Japan which is blamed on the poor techniques of local fishermen.

In addition, the application of technology in fishing and preservation unveils many shortcomings due to old practices of fishermen and the shortage of logistical fisheries services.

To enhance the efficiency of tuna catching and export, Minister Cao Duc Phat said that it is necessary to focus on giving training to fishermen, select appropriate technology, modernise fleets of tuna boats and strengthen quality control.

He noted that to assist fishermen in buying fishing equipment and building boats, the Government issued Decision No.68/QĐ-TTg that allows fishermen to access preferential loans with 0% interest rate in the first two years and 5% in coming years.
