The passenger, Dinh Dac Khanh, who is a Hong Konger but hails from the northern Vietnamese city of Hai Phong, arrived at the airport on flight VN593 at 3:30 pm.

On scanning Khanh’s luggage, customs officers found suspicious signs so they searched it manually.

These officers later found many bags of yellow powder stashed among other objects packed in 12 metal boxes in a suitcase.

Tests showed that a part of the powder was cocaine, weighing 4.572 kg, and the remaining was synthetic drugs, weighing 1.984 kg.

Customs officers made a report about the findings and handed over the passenger and the drugs to Hanoi police for investigation.

Last year, a 48-year-old Chinese man, Zhu Yin Xiang, was sentenced to death by the People’s Court of southern Tay Ninh Province for trafficking in over 1.3kg of heroin from Cambodia into Vietnam.

The man was arrested on August 16, 2012 at the Moc Bai crossroads in the province and was given the death penalty on February 5, 2013.

In June this year, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court sentenced a 27-year-old Chinese woman, Li Chung Ying, to life imprisonment for trafficking in nearly 2kg of drugs from China to Vietnam last year.

The woman was arrested on October 13, 2013 at Tan Son Nhat International Airport.
