Vietnam cruised to a 3-1 win over Indonesia on Wednesday at the Southeast Asian U-22 Football Championship to temporarily rank second in Group B of the tournament taking place from August 9 to 23 in Brunei.

The Vietnamese players displayed a dominant performance and scored all the three goals in the first half.

After midfielder Xuan Truong successfully converted a free kick to open the scoring in the fifth minute, the Vietnamese were in high spirit, making smooth coordination to launch relentless attacks toward their rivals’ goal frame.

In the 37th minute, despite being fouled by Indonesia’s defenders midfielder Cong Phuong managed to return the ball to teammate Hong Duy, who blasted it from a distance of 25 meters to double the score at the helplessness of Indonesian goalie Ravi Murdianto.

Cong Phuong scored Vietnam’s third goal in the last minute of the first half after he was set up in a favored position in the box by striker Tuan Tai and defeated Murdianto again.

However, the three goals caused the young Vietnamese to go complacent in the second half, especially the defenders who failed to stage a close defensive connection.

Indonesian substitute Septian David shortened the difference down to 1-3 in the 81st minute after he dribbled past three Vietnamese defenders and beat keeper Van Truong.

After the match, French coach Guillaume Graechen of Vietnam said, “The goal by Xuan Truong was spectacular and I want to see my players score similar goals on the field.”

“It’s strange that my players were not very good at showcasing their style of play in the first half but they scored. They did it better than what they had done in the Malaysia game [two days ago] where they lost,” the coach added.

Although he had said that he would field seven new players for each match in Group B, coach Graechen used players of the roster in the 4-0 victory over Singapore last week to confront Indonesia.

After three matches, Vietnam are standing at second after Malaysia in the group, which also includes Cambodia, defending champions and hosts Brunei, Indonesia, and Singapore.

Vietnam will take on hosts Brunei on August 15. The Vietnamese sent U-19 players to the competition while Brunei prefer players under 21 years old.

All eleven teams of the Southeast Asian region join the biennial tournament this year.

Last year at the Southeast Asian U-19 Football Championship held in Surabaya, hosts Indonesia beat Vietnam 7-6 in a penalty shootout in the final game.

The Indonesians also use U-19 players for the 2014 Southeast Asian U-22 Football Championship, also known as the 2014 Hassanal Bolkiah Cup.
