Thousands queue to register for civil service exams in northern Vietnam

The road to become tax officials for many people in two cities in northern Vietnam is proving to be tough, as three days of queuing still failed to get them to reach the sign-up section for civil service exams hosted by the municipal tax departments.

Hundreds of youth still patiently stood in long lines in front of the Hai Phong Tax Department on Thursday at noon, waiting to submit their applications for the civil service exam, held to select official employees for the city’s taxman.

The candidates were sweating heavily due to the baking hot weather.

One of them, who asked to be named only as V.T.N., said it was the fourth day she stood in the line.

The woman, hailing from northern Hai Duong Province, said she traveled 50km by passenger coach to Hai Phong City as early as Monday, but it was too late to join the queue.

Still, she was unable to reach the reception section the following two days.

“On the fourth day, I managed to get ticket number 600,” she said.

With that number, N. still had to wait for another 370 candidates before she could be called in.

I’m not sure if I can make it, as the deadline is on Friday,” she lamented.

Nguyen Thi Nga, a chief official at the Hai Phong tax department, said she had deployed 30 officials to receive applications from the candidates.

But we were overwhelmed by the number of applications,” she said.

While only 90 candidates will pass the civil service exam, the taxman had received nearly 1,000 applications by the end of yesterday, Nga revealed.

“We have to carefully examine each of the applications, so we decided that only 50 candidates are allowed to submit their application per morning or afternoon,” she talked of the department’s solution to deal with the sea of people wishing to become tax officials.

Elsewhere in Hanoi, the municipal tax department also received thousands of applications for the civil service exam to be taken in October.

“The number of applications is overwhelming as there are also candidates who come from nearby localities that do not organize exams to select tax officials,” Nguyen Van Mo, deputy head of the Hanoi Tax Department, said.

Candidates have been queuing in long lines since Monday, and even the heavy rains could not get them give up for home.

Mo said the tax department seeks to recruit 340 candidates from the exams.

We are still open for applications until the end of Friday,” he said.

Civil service examinations are examinations implemented in various countries for admission to the civil service. They are intended as a method to achieve an effective, rational public administration on a merit system.
