A Dutch woman who was the sole survivor of a Vietnam Airlines crash in 1992 is returning to the Southeast Asian country next week to introduce her autobiography, which recounts how she struggled for existence after the tragedy.
Annette Herfkens, along with her daughter, will visit Ho Chi Minh City on August 12 to meet local media and present the “Turbulence: A True Story of Survival” book-her personal account on the crash of the Vietnam Airlines 474 (VN-474) 22 years ago, and her unbelievable survival.
The book, which received great applause from audience after being published in the U.S. in January, is the struggle for existence story of Herfkens who survived eight days with multiple injuries before being rescued from the accident.
It also describes how she managed to rebuild her life, resume her career, and find love again after the rescue.
Besides sharing with Vietnamese audiences the story as a sole survivor, Herfkens is also expected to tell them about the positive living attitude and willpower energy.
The author will also return to O Kha Mountain, the site of the crash, and visit the relatives of Mi-8 flight rescue group who died while approaching the doomed airplane.
On November 14, 1992, the Vietnam Airlines flight 474, carrying six crewmembers and 24 passengers, including Herfkens and her husband, came down due to foul weather. The flight departed from Ho Chi Minh City and was bound for the resort city of Nha Trang, about 305km north-east of the southern hub.
Some passengers survived the initial impact but died before they could be rescued. Herfkens, alone in the wilderness of the jungle and stayed with other dead bodies, remained alive by drinking rainwater.
