Cultural and historical sites in Vietnam have been encouraged to remove stone statues of strange animals and replace them with more “traditional” objects.
Some “traditional” Vietnamese objects
Recently, the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has required that all symbols, statues and sacred objects that are not “traditionally Vietnamese” be removed from historical and cultural sites.
The Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibition has obliged the ministry by compiling a photo collection of objects that are approved as being “traditional”.. This compilation has been sent to departments of culture, sports and tourism nationwide and cultural inspectorates for reference. The sites in question are expected to gradually replace the offending objects with ones more suitable.
The request was made after criticism that cultural and historical sites, pagodas, temples, state offices had stone statues, mainly produced in China, in front of their gates.
