The battery of your iPhone 5 could be among a small percentage of the Apple handsets recently found having problems with recharging and battery life but do not worry because the American tech firm will start replacing it gratis in Vietnam this week.
Apple says it will replace a battery with such problems with a new one free of charge under a battery replacement program starting this Friday.
The program, running until March 1 next year, will also kick off the same day in the remaining markets where Apple authorized dealerships are available, after hitting the U.S. and China on August 22, the U.S. tech titan said in an announcement on its website.
The California-based company said it has found that “a very small percentage of iPhone 5 devices may suddenly experience shorter battery life or need to be charged more frequently.”
The affected iPhone 5 devices were sold between September 2012 and January 2013 and fall within a limited serial number range, according to Apple.
iPhone users whose devices are experiencing those ‘symptoms’ are advised to use their serial numbers to check if their handsets are eligible for the program.
They can use the serial number checker at http://bit.ly/1pdUCbs. A manual on how to find the serial number of an iPhone is also available at http://bit.ly/1pdUF6V.
Users who meet the eligibility requirements will have their iPhone 5 batteries replaced free of charge by Apple by taking their phones to an Apple authorized service provider or to the closest Apple retail store, or have it changed remotely via Apple’s technical support service.
“Your iPhone will be examined prior to any service to verify that it is eligible for this program and in working order,” Apple noted.
Consumers are also advised to back up their data to iTunes or iCloud to prepare their iPhone 5 for the battery replacement process.
It is also essential that they turn off the “Find my iPhone” setting, and erase data and settings using the “Erase all Content and Settings” option.
Apple warns, however, that if the affected iPhone is damaged, such as having a cracked screen which impairs the replacement of the battery, that issue will “need to be resolved prior to the battery replacement.”
In some cases, there may be a cost associated with the repair, according to the smartphone maker.
If consumers have already paid to replace their batteries for the same issue, they can contact Apple for a refund.
