Vietnam, South Africa enhance trade ties

Nhan Dan Online – Representatives from businesses of both Vietnam and South Africa gathered at a trade forum held in Johannesburg on July 25 to promote their potential and study requisite procedures to realise co-operative links in the future.

The forum, which was organised by the Vietnamese Embassy in South Africa and the Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI), attracted businesses and importers from Johannesburg, Durban and surrounding regions, together with 18 businesses from Vietnam.

Co-chairing the forum, Vietnamese Ambassador to South Africa, Le Huy Hoang and Zanele Mkhize of South Africa’s Ministry of Industry and Trade answered questions about market potential and scale, prices, tax, import-export preferential policies and payment procedures, while sharing their experience in addressing arising challenges.

Hoang stressed that co-operation and friendship between the two countries have seen new development momentum, especially in economics and trade, since two-way trade turnover topped US$1 billion in 2013, a 20-fold rise over US$54 million in 2002.

JCCI President, Fay Mukaddam expressed her pleasure with recent positive developments in bilateral trade relations, saying that the JCCI would do its utmost to promote investment and commercial exchange between the two countries.

The African country considered Vietnam as an important market and the South African Government would create favourable conditions for both countries’ businesses to collaborate effectively, said Mkhize.

Vietnamese representatives introduced diversified high-quality products, from traditional products of agriculture, fisheries, textile, garment and footwear to consumer products of cell phones, computers and electronic components.

Meanwhile, South African businesses recommended their strengths in the mineral, wood and cotton sectors. Representatives from South Africa’s Ministry of Industry and Trade welcomed Vietnamese businesses to open representative offices in Johannesburg and other cities.

After the discussion session, the attendees joined business-to-business matching meetings to study business procedures and opportunities.
