Anime coffee shop

“The Other Person,” an anime-inspired coffee shop located on Ho Chi Minh City’s Ton That Dam Street in District 1, features waitresses who wear rabbit ears and dress up as French maids, complete with wigs with long tresses, dresses and pinafores.

The idea of a maid café, which is popular in some Asian countries including Japan, Korea and Taiwan where they have been around since the 2000s, is to bring customers a deluxe experience in which they are pampered and called “master” or “mistress.”

Phan Tien Vy, 25, the owner of the HCMC-based coffee shop, said that he and his friend both like Japanese comic books and decided to open the cafe in the hope of providing customers with a relaxing and unforgettable time.

Library coffee shop

Some Vietnamese coffee lovers enjoy reading a book with their coffee, a pasttime that is becoming less and less popular among today’s youth.

In the early morning, Chieu, a book cafe located in HCMC’s District 1, welcomes a number of customers who spend their free time sitting on wooden chairs, reading books and sipping coffee.

Tan Hieu, 37, a customer who has gone to this coffee shop a few times, said that he prefers the ambiance here to other cafes as it gives him peace of mind, allowing him to rest and think despite his busy life.

The shop was established by Chieu Anh Nguyen, a 37-year-old who wished to bring his customers a unique experience and to promote reading by offering over 1,000 books in a wide range of genres.

Pet coffee shop

Many new cafes offer the opportunity to relax among animals, from dogs and cats to some reptile species including snakes, lizards, python and tarantulas.

Dogi coffee, a café in HCMC’s District 3, is an ideal place for dog lovers as it is home to more than 30 dogs of different breeds including Huskies, Samoyeds, Cookers, Yorkshire Terriers, and Poodles.

Established in April 2012 by two Korean girls on the second floor of an apartment, the café welcomes customers who only need to pay VND70,000 (US$3.28) for a drink in order to play with the dogs.

Besides Dogi café, cat café and reptile café are also two attractive destinations where animal lovers often meet up.

The Ailu Cat Café, located in HCMC’s Phu Nhuan District, is home to not only nearly 20 fluffy cats but also hamsters and dogs, which are carefully trained to play with customers all day long.

Last but not least, the Babo Café, also located in Phu Nhuan District, welcomes customers who want to see different kinds of reptiles including lizards, pythons, and snakes. Drinkers who don’t like reptiles can relax with parrots, hedgehogs, and frogs.
