Heart-stirring photos of emergencies at communal health station

VietNamNet Bridge – “Emergency at communal health station” is the title of a set of photos that won first prize in a photo contest held by xomnhiepanh, a major website on photography in Vietnam.

The photos portray the deprivation and human suffering at a health station in a commune in Quang Binh, one of the poorest provinces in Vietnam.

The story footage is about an emergency for a boy named Tuan. The boy had an accident in the jungle and his leg tendon was ruptured. The wound was about 1.5 cm deep and quite long. A nurse treated the wound with 12 stitches, using only dressing and antiseptic. Tuan’s father had to use his hands as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.

Without an anesthetic, he suffered terrible pain.

Without medical thread, the nurse sutured the wound with sewing thread. The light in the room was also not enough.

Tuan’s brother had to hold him tightly so the nurse could suture the wound.

Finally, the emergency case was completed in the poorly-equipped health station.
