Exhibit of int’l scientists ongoing in Vietnam capital (photos)

An exhibit which showcases photos capturing the everyday moments of international scientists is running in Hanoi until July 30.

The exhibit, “Nhung Nguoi Giai Ma, Kham Pha Toan Hoc” (The math decoders and explorers), is running at L’ Espace (24 Trang Tien, Hoan Kiem District).

The photos capture everyday moments of revered scientists including Alain Connes, Thibault Damour, Sophie De Buyl, Maxim Kontsevitch and famed Vietnamese professor Ngo Bao Chau and demonstrations of their scientific ideas and assessments.

Prof. Chau, who is now a lecturer at the University of Chicago in the US, received the Fields Medal in 2010, making him the first and the only Vietnamese to get the world’s most prestigious maths award.

The photos and quotes showcased at the exhibit are taken from a book titled “Les Deschiffreurs” by Jean Francois Dars, Annick Lesne and Anne Papillualt in 2007 and 2008.

The exhibit is organized by France’s Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies (IHÉS) to mark its 60th anniversary.

The IHÉS was founded in 1958 by businessman and mathematical physicist Léon Motchane as a research centre in France to support advanced research in mathematics and theoretical physics.

The IHÉS runs “Publications Mathématiques de l’IHÉS,” a highly regarded mathematical journal.
