(VOV) – Residents in Hanoi felt aftershocks on the evening of July 20 after three earthquakes hit Muong La district in the northern mountain province of Son La.
The National Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre under the Institute of Geophysics reported the first quake, measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale, struck Muong La at 19.14 at a depth of 8.5km.
The quake lasting about 30 seconds shook the whole It Ong commune, forcing local residents to jump out of their houses in panic.
People said the aftershock caused cutlery to fall down. Some cracks measuring 40cm x 0.2cm appeared on a wall of a house in the commune.
Nguyen Hong Phuong, director of the National Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre, said as the quake occurred at a depth of around 8km, which is shallow compared to the earth’s surface, aftershocks spread to Hanoi.
Many people living in high-rise buildings in the capital, including Ha Dong district, felt the tremors. Several home furnishings shook.
Two other earthquakes measuring 3.2 and 3.5 on the Richter scale struck Muong La district at 20.23 and 21.42 respectively.
