Yamaha Vietnam recalls 35,850 motorbikes over faulty brake light

Yamaha Motor Vietnam has begun to recall 35,850 motorbikes to replace a break light circuit due to a material error that can melt and can cause vehicle fires.

In a statement on Wednesday, the joint venture said that it is recalling its Sirius Fi and Jupiter Fi, both 115 cc, manufactured from March 31 – May 22 of this year.

From June 19, people can take their motorbikes to Yamaha service stations nationwide to replace the breaker for free–these customers will also receive a gift of two engine oil replacement vouchers.

According to Yamaha Motor Vietnam, the use of a substandard plastic for the cover of the rear light breaker lead to its possible melting.

Only 0.1 percent of 35,850 motorbikes used the substandard material but the company is still recalling the entire series for replacement, news website VnExpress reported.

The company is contacting customers to inform them about the issue and it is estimated that 70 percent of the targeted motorbikes will be fixed within the next ten days.

The whole process between 10 and 15 minutes, the company said.

The company detected the problem after a customer had a motorbike fixed at a Yamaha service shop and so far, no accidents have been caused by the error, VnExpress quoted an unnamed company source as saying.

In May 2013, Yamaha Motor Vietnam recalled about 83,000 electronic fuel injection scooters to fix a problem with the pipe rack that could cause a gasoline leak.
