A program showcasing 31 Vietnamese feature films and documentaries and five foreign-made flicks will run in Paris from today until June 27 as part of the Vietnam Year in France.
The program, “Panorama du Cinéma Vietnamien” (Panorama of Vietnamese Cinema) is jointly organized by Paris-based Cinémathèque Française, which boasts one of the world’s largest film archives, movie documents and film-related objects, to promote Vietnamese films through the course of time and their directors’ perspectives.
Thirty-one features and documentaries by 24 Vietnamese directors and five by foreign ones, will portray generations of Vietnamese directors, ranging from veteran directors such as Pham Ky Nam with “Chom va Sa” (Chom and Sa), Nguyen Hong Sen with “Canh Dong Hoang” (The Abandoned Field: Free Fire Zone) and Pham Van Khoa with “Chi Dau” (Ms Dau), to younger talents such as Vu Ngoc Dang with gay-themed feature “Hot Boy Noi Loan” (Lost in Paradise), and Nguyen Thi Tham with homosexual-themed documentary “Chuyen Di Cuoi Cung Cua Chi Phung” (The Last Journey of Madam Phung), which was screened at the 36th Cinéma du Réel Festival in Paris earlier this year.
Documentary “Hai The Gioi” (Two Worlds), created in 1953 in France by Vietnamese-French director Pham Van Nhan, now 95, will also be shown during the program.
The program also highlights films and documentaries by Western directors, including Robert Kramer, Julien Lahmi, Ali Benkirane, and Maxime Samel.
Yda, a club of film buffs which has been in operation in the French capital since 2008, in coordination with Cinémathèque Française, will also hold a workshop on the current situation and prospects of Vietnamese cinema at La Clef Cinema (34 Daubenton, 75005 Paris) on June 21.
In attendance will be French director Hubert Niogret, whose documentary “D’un Extreme a l’Autre: le Cinema Vietnamien” (From One Extreme to Another: Vietnamese Cinema) will open the workshop, with the participation of overseas Vietnamese directors Dang Nhat Minh and Tran Anh Hung.
The Vietnam Year in France, which is to mark the 40th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties between the two countries, kicked off in February 2014.
