Vietnam airports declare war on birds

The Central Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has instructed relevant agencies to step up measures to control bird populations at all airports in Vietnam after at least 11 bird strikes were recorded this year.

The agency said the incidents threatened aviation safety at airports in Ho Chi Minh City, the central city of Da Nang, Pleiku in the Central Highlands, Vinh in northern Vietnam, and Rach Gia in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang, according to a statement on its website.

To limit and prevent future bird strikes, CAAV director Lai Xuan Thanh instructed the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) to train and assign personnel to control birds and other wild animals at the airports.

ACV will study and invest in traps and equipment to scare birds away, based on the location of the airports which determine the specific migratory and non-migratory birds.

The agency will also make efforts to limit the water and food sources near the airports.

CAAV instructed Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air, Jetstar Pacific and the Vietnam Air Services Company to report about bird strikes and bird activities detected near the airports and asked that all preliminary results to be submitted by August 31.

Mai Trong Tuan, a former Vietnam Airlines pilot, said most bird strikes occur near the ground when the plane is landing or taking-off.

“A collision between a wild bird and a ‘metal bird’ can be a serious incident if the bird is big and swallowed into the plane’s engine.”

The greater the speed difference between the plane and the bird, the scarier the incident ,” he said.

Last year, ACV sent a team to Changi International Airport in Singapore to study bird mitigation measures at the airport.

ACV has set up systems to monitor and prevent birds at all airports nationwide, including patrol teams tasked with clearing shrubs and filling ponds, recording birds and bird strikes and using sound to scare birds away before landings and take-offs.
