The man, Tran Minh Dat, was sentenced to death on charges of “illegally transporting drugs.”

Dat was arrested at Tan Son Nhat International Airport on February 24, 2013, when customs officers found 12 plastic bags of white powder hidden among the clothes in two cardboard boxes.

Tests made later on some samples of the powder showed that they were heroin. The total weight of the 12 bags of heroin is 2.747 kg.

Dat told investigators that he did not know these bags contained heroin, and said he was carrying them to Australia after one of his acquaintances in that country had him do so.

According to the indictment, Dat went to Australia by means of a false marriage. During the time of seeking a job there, Dat met a man he called “Uncle Bay,” who is a friend of the owner of the house Dat rented to stay.

After Dat told Uncle Bay he wanted to return to Vietnam but he could not afford the trip, the man offered to lend him AU$10,000 on a condition that the Vietnamese Australian would have to bring two cardboard boxes from Vietnam to Australia for him.

Dat agreed to the deal and on February 24, 2013, after spending nearly a month in Vietnam, he came to a supermarket on Ba Thang Hai Street in Ho Chi Minh City to receive two cardboard boxes that Uncle Bay wanted him to bring to Australia.

One of the boxes was sealed while the other was left open and not full. Dat then packed his clothes into that box and sealed it with tape.

Later the same day Dat brought the boxes to the airport and the heroin hidden in both of them was detected.

Last month, the HCMC People’s Court also handed down a death sentence to a Vietnamese-American man who was caught stashing heroin in his underwear at the same airport last year.

Dinh Jason, 41, received the capital punishment on charges of illegally transporting drugs at his trial on April 22.

Jason arrived at the airport on June 12 last year to take a flight to Australia, but he was arrested after customs officers and security-screening staff found three plastic packs of powder in white, weighing over 1 kilogram, stashed in his underwear.
