His accomplice Le Van Long, 25, was also detained. All the stolen weapons were recovered.
Police said Lam had learnt about the prison security and schedule through a friend who’s a guard there, whose name they have not yet to reveal.
At around 3:30 a.m. on April 26, Lam brought with him a saw and a bolt cutters
and cut off the lock of the firearms storage of the prison, according to the police report.
He saw 10 Type 54 and two Type 59 pistols on the table. He took six Type 54 pistols and fled.
He met Long to ask him to keep four pistols, which Long then hid at his girlfriend’s house.
Lam brought two pistols to Bac Ninh Province to try to sell them, but was arrested there at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
Police also said they had arrested Cao Hoang Long, the third suspect in the heist, but did not clarify his role.
