Vietnam police seize two for ‘abusing democratic freedoms’

Police from the Ministry of Public Security have detained two Vietnamese citizens for posting many articles on the Internet containing wrong and misleading information that undermines State agencies’ prestige and weakens the public’s trust in them.

Nguyen Huu Vinh, 58, who resides in the Ciputra Urban Area in Hanoi’s Tay Ho District, was arrested on Monday on charges of “abusing democratic freedoms to infringe upon the State’s interests and the legitimate rights and interests of organizations and/or citizens” under Article 258 of Vietnam’s Penal Code, police said.


Along with Vinh, Nguyen Thi Minh Thuy, a 34-year-old woman, who lives in Thanh Cong residential area in the capital city’s Ba Dinh District, was also held the same day on the same charge as Vinh.


Police also executed search warrants for the homes of both Vinh and Thuy on Monday.


These two detainees have posted many articles on the Internet that provide wrong and misleading information prejudicial to the prestige of a number of State agencies and undermine the public’s trust in State agencies, organizations, and citizens, investigators said.


The ministry’s investigation police agency is continuing to clarify the wrongdoing committed by Vinh and Thuy in order to punish them in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
