Vietnam authorities find carcinogen in fake L’Oreal mascara

Tests conducted in Ho Chi Minh City have shown that a number of fake L’Oreal mascara products contain carcinogenic ingredients.

Ten samples of knock-off Maybelline mascara tested positive for a dominant amount of ethylene ethyl acrylate (EEA), a copolymer that carries risks of causing colon and rectal cancer, according to the municipal Department of Science and Technology.

A L’Oreal representative said it had the samples tested after a number of customers who purchased the products online or from unauthorized market stalls said their eyelashes fell out.

Some had to be hospitalized with swollen eyelids.
