Defender Tran Manh Dung and goalkeeper Nguyen Manh Dung will be in custody for 40 days, lieutenant colonel La Hong Phuc of Ninh Binh Police Department told Lao Dong newspaper.
They are alleged of “organizing gambling,” which is punishable by jail term of up to ten years in the Penal Code.
According to investigators, defender Dung was the one who had got eight others involved in the betting and offered to book VND2 billion (US$95,000) with Dao Duc Loi, an illegal bookmaker in Hai Phong City. Loi only accepted half the amount.
Vissai Ninh Binh defeated Kelantan 3-2 and the Vietnamese players won the betting.
Goalkeeper Dung not only gambled but also asked his friend Tran Cong Thanh in Ho Chi Minh City to receive the winning money of VND800 million that Loi transferred a day after the match, investigators said.
Loi and Thanh have been banned from travelling abroad.
Asked whether Vissai Ninh Binh players gambling over other matches at AFC Cup and V-League, Lieu. Col. Phuc said investigators so far have only focused on the club’s match with Kelantan.
“Other players involved in the betting are still staying at the Ninh Binh young team training center, we are yet to decide whether to investigate or detain them,” he said.
